In addition to writing, ghost-writing and editing, I frequently work as a copy-editor and sub-editor. I copy-edit and proof-read books for various publishers, both digitally and running a final eye over unbound proof pages.
I have worked office shifts as a sub-editor for a range of newspapers, magazines and websites, including the Guardian, the Independent, thelondonpaper, City A.M., International Business Times and British Airways’ High Life. I am thus fluent in InDesign and QuarkXPress and well versed in Content Management Systems.
I’m a diligent and assiduous sub but, let’s face it, the best part of the job has always been thinking up killer headlines. I will go to my grave a tad happier for having written these:
• Working as news editor on a Q magazine special at Glastonbury in a Biblical-deluge year, we needed a heading for a two-page aerial photo of the site submerged under a sea of mud. Cue: RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOAH
• City A.M. wanted a headline for a story about a high-street retailer who had been ordered to remove the acid house smiley logo from their shopfronts. So: TAKE THAT SMILE OFF YOUR FASCIA
• When High Life ran a feature about an intrepid naturalist, Subaraj Rajathurai, known as Raj, fighting the urban sprawl devastating Singapore’s nature reserves, it would have been criminal not to use: RAJ AGAINST THE MACHINE
So, you have been warned. But please feel free to hire me anyway.
